This all-day tour
departs from the Lynchburg location of your choice, and begins with a visit to
the Anne Spencer House and Garden. Anne Spencer was an internationally
acclaimed poet and part of the Harlem Renaissance. She was also a
founder of the Lynchburg Chapter of the NAACP. Our next stop is the Old
City Cemetery. There we will follow the popular black history quarter
mile walk which traces the contributions of Lynchburg's African-American
citizens in education, business, religion, and the military life of the
community throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. The tour continues
with a visit to the Legacy Museum of African-American History. The
museum houses historical artifacts relating the contributions of the
African-American community in Lynchburg and the region. For lunch, you
may choose for your group to eat in one of Lynchburg's restaurants, or enjoy a
box lunch at the Bertha Green Webster Carriage House at Point of Honor; former
home of Dr. George Cabell, Patrick Henry's personal physician. Our
afternoon begins at one of the nation's oldest black colleges, Virginia
University of Lynchburg, and a visit to Court Street Baptist Church, one of
the city's major African-American landmarks. We will conclude the day
with a driving tour of Lynchburg's five historic districts. From the
early Quaker conservative influence to the elaborate Victorian statements of
opulence, the rich heritage of residential life in Lynchburg comes alive.
