This all-day
tour departs from the Lynchburg location of your choice. The first stop
is Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson's retreat from his many visitors and
activities at Monticello. The octagonal home is a fine example of
Jefferson's architectural genius. Our next destination is Lynchburg's
Point of Honor, a Federal-style house built in 1815 by Dr. George Cabell,
Patrick Henry's personal physician. For lunch, you may choose for your
group to eat in one of Lynchburg's restaurants or enjoy a box lunch at the
Bertha Green Webster Carriage House at Point of Honor. We will spend the
afternoon discovering Lynchburg's five historic districts. From the
early conservative influence to the elaborate Victorian statements of
opulence, the rich heritage of residential life in Lynchburg comes alive in
the city's architecture. On occasion, private homes may be added to your
tour. The day concludes with a stop at either the Avoca Museum or Oak
Ridge Estates. Avoca is a Virginia Historic Landmark and is listed on
the National Register of Historic Places. Home site of the revolutionary
patriot, Colonel Charles Lynch, this restored and refurbished landmark
features an eight room Victorian house, brick kitchen, smoke house, visitors
center, and gift shop. Oak Ridge Estates was built by Thomas Fortune
Ryan, one of the early twentieth century's ten richest men. Now
privately owned, the 23,000 square foot mansion and 4800 acre estate's
restoration began in 1990 and will continue well into the 21st century.
